How to make close-up Photographs of Wild Birds
Why GoPro is a Good Choice?
This is my setup to video / photograph birds in 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) or slow motion in 1080p (1920 x 1080), 240 fps. The GoPro minimum focus distance is about 12 inches. In order, to reduce that distance and get super close-up images, I use either +4 or +10 close-up macro lens. Although, the GoPro doesn’t have the ability to accept additional lens, so I use an aluminum housing which does accept 52mm lens. With the GoPro smart phone app, I can control the recording remotely. For camera equipment that I use, see the Birds Walking Down Amazon Store.
Reasons GoPro is a Good Choice
- Relatively inexpensive compared to high-end SLR cameras
- 4K Quality of images / videos is amazing (When birds are inside focus range of about 3 – 10 inches and sunlight behind camera)
- Waterproof (Although not entirely with external battery)
- You can control recording remotely with cell phone (Maintaining connection with camera from a distance is limited, but I haven’t had too much problem)
- You can view what the camera will record from phone (This drains the battery faster and reduces distance from camera to maintain connection)
It requires some patience, but this method can yield nice photos / videos.
